Santorini is the most beautiful island in Greece and among the top destinations worldwide. Located on the southern side of the Aegean Sea, Santorini is actually a small group of volcanic islands. In the ancient times, Santorini was a single island and its name was “Strogili”, which means “round” in Greek. However, a huge volcanic eruption in 1,650 B.C. gave the island its present impressive form. New small islands were created, while others disappeared and the volcano’s caldera was filled with water.
On top of the caldera, villages have been constructed and each of them gives wonderful view to the Aegean Sea. This volcanic background has affected the geology of the island and has created impressive beaches, like the Red Beach, Monolithos, Columbo, Perissa, Kamari and others. The villages along the caldera’s edge are true architectural marvels, with cave houses, paved streets and lovely churches. Famous all over the world for its magnificent sunset, Santorini is the most romantic place for couples and honeymooners.
